Top 25 roundup: Providence dumps No. 6 Marquette

Devin Carter tossed in a game-high 22 points to help Providence remain unbeaten at home with a 72-57 upset of No. 6 Marquette on Tuesday night in the Big East opener for both teams.

Carter, who sat out Providence's 78-64 victory over Sacred Heart on Saturday with a back injury, made six of his 10 field-goal attempts, including 5 of 9 shots from beyond the 3-point arc. He also had eight rebounds and four assists.

Ticket Gaines added 18 points for the Friars (10-2), who improved their home record to 9-0. Providence made 11 of its 32 3-point attempts.

Tyler Kolek had 21 points, nine rebounds and five assists for Marquette, which shot 18 of 56 (32.1 percent) from the field. The Golden Eagles (9-3) were 4-for-20 on 3-point attempts.

No. 20 James Madison 87, Coppin State 48

T.J. Bickerstaff had 18 points, seven rebounds and four steals as the Dukes used depth and defense to dominate the Eagles in Harrisonburg, Va.

Terrence Edwards Jr. emerged from a slump to score 16 points while Julien Wooden added 13 points, six rebounds and four steals as James Madison (11-0) extended its best start in program history and remained one of four unbeaten teams in Division I.

Justin Winston had 13 points and eight rebounds for Coppin State (1-12), which lost its fifth in a row. Coppin State committed 30 turnovers, with Michael Green III leading the Dukes' defense with six steals. James Madison totaled 22 steals.

No. 23 Memphis 77, No. 22 Virginia 54

David Jones scored 26 points and the Tigers never trailed in a nonconference clash with the Cavaliers in Memphis.

The Tigers (9-2) won their fourth consecutive game, including their third straight against a ranked opponent after beating then-No. 21 Texas A&M on Dec. 10 and then-No. 13 Clemson on Saturday.

Memphis ended a five-game winning streak for the mistake-prone Cavaliers (9-2), who were playing their first true road game and came in ranked second in the nation in scoring defense — allowing just 53.3 points per game. Reece Beekman paced Virginia with 13 points, and Ryan Dunn added 11 points and 11 rebounds.

No. 25 Ole Miss 74, Troy 53

Matthew Murrell scored a game-high 18 points and added 10 steals to help lead the Rebels to a victory over the Trojans in Oxford, Miss.

Jaemyn Brakefield added 17 points for the Rebels (11-0), who extended their best start to a season since 2007-08, when they won their first 13 games. Jaylen Murray also scored 16 for Ole Miss, while Allen Flanigan added 13 points and nine assists.

Tayton Conerway led Troy (5-6) with 13 points, shooting 3-for-3 on 3-point attempts. The Trojans shot just 17-for-47 (36.2 percent) from the field compared to the Rebels' 27-for-59 shooting (45.8 percent).
