TSN Will No Longer Air Tweets On Live Broadcasts
TSN sure screwed up when they broadcast a joke tweet saying that Joffrey Lupul was sleeping with Maple Leaf teammate Dion Phaneuf's wife, Elisha Cuthbert, but they've come up with a foolproof plan to prevent this type of situation from ever occurring again: they're going to stop airing "public" tweets on live broadcasts. Brilliant! Via the Winnipeg Free Press:
A spokesman for TSN would not discuss how the offensive tweet, which ran on a live crawl at the bottom of the screen, made it to air.
But Greg McIsaac did say "going forward TSN will not be airing public tweets during our live broadcasts."
Live tweets add almost nothing of value to news broadcasts, and are only ever noteworthy when screw-ups allow the wrong tweets onto air, so good work TSN. But the reason they shouldn't run tweets is NOT because offensive/joke/troll ones get aired—having a live person rather than an algorithm approving tweets should take care of that—but because they are dumb wastes of space.
