To make room for Tonkin on the 26-man roster, the Twins placed outfielder Max Kepler on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to Sunday) with a right knee contusion.
Tonkin, 34, went 0-2 with a 4.50 ERA in three relief appearances this season, his first with the Mets. He allowed eight runs (two earned) on six hits in four innings.
Originally drafted by the Twins in 2008, Tonkin is 10-8 with a 4.38 ERA in 189 career relief appearances for Minnesota (2013-17), the Atlanta Braves (2023) and the Mets.
Kepler, 31, fouled a ball off his right leg in the March 28 season opener at Kansas City. He is off to a 1-for-20 start in five games this season.
Kepler is in his 10th season with Minnesota. He is a career .235 hitter with 153 homers and 466 RBIs in 972 games.
The Twins transferred right-hander Zack Weiss (right shoulder strain) to the 60-day injured list to make room for Tonkin on the 40-man roster.
