UMass tops Florida State, extends winning streak

Daniel Hankins-Sanford scored 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead UMass to a 103-95 victory over Florida State on Saturday at the Orange Bowl Classic in Sunrise, Fla.

K'Jei Parker made 6 of his 9 attempts from 3-point range and also scored 24 points for the Minutemen, who extended their winning streak to five games.

UMass (8-3) received 20 points and eight rebounds from Leonardo Bettiol, and 18 points from Marcus Banks. Bettiol scored 16 points in the second half, when the Minutemen outscored the Seminoles 60-48.

Robert McCray led Florida State (5-5) with 21 points, eight rebounds and 11 assists. Martin Somerville finished the game with 15 points.

Florida State (5-5) won five of its first six games, but has lost four in a row.


UMass scored the first eight points and held its largest lead of the first half, 32-19, after a Hankins-Sanford layup capped an 8-0 run with 9:04 remaining in the half.

Florida State responded with a 7-0 run and took its first lead when Somerville connected on three free throws to put the Seminoles up 38-36 with 3:20 left in the half. Florida State shot 53.3% from the field over the first 20 minutes (16 of 30) and had a 47-43 halftime lead.

Parker and Banks each had 14 points in the first half.

UMass regained the lead on a Bettiol layup that made it a 59-57 game with 14:10 left. The Minutemen stretched their advantage to 76-67 on a Donovan Brown basket with 9:29 on the clock and had their largest lead of the game following a three-point play by Hankins-Sanford that put UMass up 98-80 with 2:39 to play.

A late 3-pointer sliced the UMass lead to six points, but Florida State failed to get any closer.
