David Beckham played in the last game of his career today after announcing his retirement from soccer last week. He started and was given the captain's armband for his club, Paris Saint-Germain, in their last home match of the season against last-place Brest.
With PSG comfortably ahead, 3-1, the Englishman was subbed in the 82nd minute. Before he left the pitch, his team surrounded him and showered him with hugs and both teams applauded his exit as fans at the Parc des Princes rose in a standing ovation. He wept openly as he walked off.
When the final whistle blew, though, he returned, and tears turned to laughter as the Ligue 1 champions tossed him in the air one last time. It was a proper sendoff for Beckham. With a total of ten league titles with four different clubs over his 21-year professional career, he's one of the most successful and beloved soccer players of all time. He'll surely be missed.
