We Are All Dave McKenna LXIX (Alleged Arson Edition)

A figure moved silently down the shoulder of Jessie Smith Road near Mt. Airy, Maryland. Whoever it was — and it was impossible to tell in the dim moonlight last Saturday — walked toward the New Beginning Nazarene Church, a simple place of worship on a hill. On the church grounds sits a baseball diamond: the Russell Windsor Field. It is a tidy little field built by the Four County Little League almost a decade ago, the kind of field you stop and admire. But the interloper glided past it purposefully. Past the nearby equipment shed and into a Porta Potty, where pressing business awaited. But not the kind of business you might suspect.

Soon, the Porta Pottys were engulfed in flames. The arsonist watched as the fire spread to the equipment shed, destroying field conditioner and a pitching machine. Maybe the arsonist knew that Little League insurance wouldn't cover the $10,000 in losses.

But did the arsonist know that Daniel Snyder would help cover the losses and be praised for it on local news? Could the arsonist know such things? And if so, how? Many questions. Precious few answers. All we can hope for is that the miscreant is caught before he strikes anew and forces people to again write nice things about Daniel Snyder:

[Four County Little League President Jim] Gill said he has received many calls with offers of help. One of those calls came from Washington Redskins owner Daniel Snyder, who phoned Gill on Tuesday afternoon to offer the league $10,000 from the Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation.

Gill, who said he doesn't follow football, was grateful for the donation, but didn't realize who exactly he had spoken with until co-workers told him who Snyder was.

"I was definitely shocked and surprised once I figured out who he was," Gill said.

Redskins spokesman Tony Wyllie said a major focus of the foundation, which was established when Snyder bought the team in 1999, is serving area youth. For example, the foundation has helped many local football teams with expenses.

"Dan Snyder heard about what happened and was quite touched and wanted to do something immediately," Wyllie said.
