We Are All Dave McKenna XLII
Here's your daily link to Dave McKenna's brilliant "Cranky Redskins Fan's Guide to Dan Snyder," which we'll be posting until Snyder's dumbass libel suit takes a shillelagh to the gob.
In honor of the Irish, a noble and temperate race, let us refrain from treating Dan Snyder like the miserable langer that he is and instead present you with a cheerful story by the object of Dan Snyder's ire. Today, McKenna brings us a special St. Paddy's Day tale about a team of Maryland basketball irregulars — including current Notre Dame coach Mike Brey — on a debaucherous 1981 tour of Ireland. A sample:
"We met for the first time at the airport," says [Brian] Magid. "We never played before Ireland."
"The tournament needed something better than ‘the team just met at the airport' to sell," Strickland says.
They looked like anything but champions when they landed on St. Patrick's Day morning. "This was when beer was free on international flights," DeVito explains.
Strickland realized basketball was the All-Stars' secondary concern when he hosted a party for the team at his second-story flat.
"I remember watching everybody dancing and my floor move up and down," he says. "My floor wasn't supposed to move."
Move the floor, lads (and lasses). And please also move your thoughts to a small donation to the Washington City Paper's legal defense fund. Dunk O' The Irish: Remembering a Maryland all-star team's Irish misadventure [Washington City Paper]
