May 5, 2024; Kansas City, Missouri, USA; Milwaukee Brewers shortstop Willy Adames (27) hits a three run home run against the Kansas City Royals in the ninth inning at Kauffman Stadium. credits: Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports Willy Adames slammed a three-run homer in the ninth inning as the visiting Milwaukee Brewers rallied past the Kansas City Royals, 6-5, on Tuesday night to even a three-game series.
With two outs in the ninth and the Brewers trailing 5-3, William Contreras doubled and Gary Sanchez walked before Adames lined a curveball from James McArthur (1-2) into the left field bullpen for his seventh home run of the year.
Jared Koenig (3-1) allowed two hits in 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief for the win, and Trevor Megill pitched a perfect ninth for his third save.
Adames' three-run shot spoiled a Royals rally, as Kansas City scored four runs in the fifth to take a 4-2 lead.
With Kansas City down 2-0, MJ Melendez tripled to open the fifth before scoring on Kyle Isbel's one-out single. The Royals later got a two-run double from Vinnie Pasquantino and an RBI double from Salvador Perez to cap the outburst and drive Brewers starter Colin Rea from the game.
Rea allowed four runs on seven hits and walked one in 4 2/3 innings. He struck out two.
Milwaukee took an early lead when Rhys Hoskins and Joey Ortiz led off the second inning with back-to-back homers off Kansas City starter Seth Lugo.
It was Hoskins' seventh blast of the season and Ortiz's second.
After the homers, Lugo surrendered only three singles for the rest of his outing. In 6 2/3 innings, he allowed three runs on six hits and a walk while fanning five.
Lugo has given up five homers in his past four starts, all solo shots.
Behind 4-2, Milwaukee cut its deficit in half on pinch hitter Andruw Monasterio's two-out RBI single in the seventh.
Pasquantino answered in the bottom half of the frame with a sharp RBI single to center for a 5-3 advantage. He finished the game 3-for-5 with three RBIs and a run.
Bobby Witt Jr. had two hits and scored twice for the Royals.
