Wyndham Clark maintained the lead in the U.S. Open after shooting 1-under-par 69 in the second round Friday at Southampton, N.Y.

Clark left the course with a four-shot edge, though many golfers had yet to complete the round and others were more than an hour away from starting the round at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club.

Clark arrived early to complete two holes from the first round, with a pair of pars putting him at 64. So his two-day total is at 7-under 133. Clark posted a birdie on the final hole, with his other birdies also coming on the backside (Nos. 12 and 13).

England's Matt Fizpatrick shot 70 in the second round to reach the tournament's halfway mark at 3 under.

The morning's big movers were Collin Morikawa with a 65 and Xander Schauffele with a 66.

Schauffele, with a birdie on the last hole, is at 3 under. Morikawa moved to 2 under for the tournament.

Those with tee times at 2 p.m. or later included World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy and England's Tommy Fleetwood.

Clark had a quick turnaround, completing the first round and then starting his second round prior to 8 a.m.

Clark's first-round lead was by two strokes on Dustin Johnson, while Gary Woodland and Fitzpatrick posted first-round 67s. The group with first-round 68s included Sam Stevens, Max McGreevy, Spencer Tibbits, amateur Ryder Cowan and Spain's Jon Rahm.

Johnson plummeted in the second round with 77, falling to 3 over and out of the top 50. He had two birdies on the backside, but two bogeys, a double-bogey and an eight at the par-4 15th across his last eight holes.

Among early finishers for the second round, Japan's Ryo Hisatsune posted 69 to reach even-par for the tournament and England's Aaron Rai shot 67 to move to 1 over through two rounds.
