Yankees SS Anthony Volpe avoids serious elbow injury
Jun 4, 2025; Bronx, New York, USA; New York Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe (11) walks back to the field after hitting into an inning ending double play in the seventh inning against the Cleveland Guardians at Yankee Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Wendell Cruz-Imagn Images X-rays and a CT scan were negative on Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe's elbow after he was hit by a pitch in a 9-6 win Friday night over the Boston Red Sox in New York.
"Good news," manager Aaron Boone said after the game. "... A little stiff and sore but hopefully nothing that keeps him out for very long."
Volpe sustained a contusion when an 88-mph changeup from Walker Buehler clipped his left elbow with the bases loaded in the second inning, forcing in a run to give New York a 7-0 lead.
Both the X-rays at Yankee Stadium and the CT scan at a Manhattan hospital revealed there was no fracture, Volpe said after returning to the ballpark.
"Once ... the adrenaline wore off, it got pretty big," Volpe said of his swollen elbow after returning to the ballpark, per NJ.com. "Painful and stiff."
Volpe, 24, has appeared in 61 of the Yankees' first 62 games this season after playing in 160 games in 2024 and 159 as a rookie in 2023.
He hit a two-run homer during New York's five-run first Friday and is hitting .241 with eight homers and 37 RBIs this season.
