Mandatory Credit: Bill Streicher-Imagn Images Philadelphia 76ers guard Jared McCain will miss the rest of his rookie season to recover from knee surgery, the team announced Thursday.
McCain underwent surgery on Dec. 17 to repair a torn left meniscus he sustained during Philadelphia's 121-107 home loss to Indiana four days earlier. The 76ers initially said McCain would remain sidelined indefinitely, but a later evaluation on the knee compelled the team to take greater precaution.
"Jared McCain was reviewed today by the surgeon who performed surgery on his left knee on Dec. 17. He is progressing well and will be out for the remainder of the 2024-25 season," the 76ers said in a release.
McCain, 20, had been a standout with averages of 15.3 points, 2.6 assists and 2.4 rebounds in 23 games (eight starts) for Philadelphia. He shot 46 percent from the field and 38.3 percent from 3-point range.
The Duke product was the 16th overall pick in last summer's draft.
The 76ers have struggled to stay healthy this season, with key players Joel Embiid, Paul George and Kyle Lowry all missing extended time with various injuries.
Philadelphia (15-20) enters Thursday one game behind Chicago for the Eastern Conference's final play-in spot.
