And We Don't Care About the Old Folks, Talking 'Bout the Old Style Too
Notes on the teams Clare cares about from a day in baseball...
Which do you want first? The bad news is that Roy Oswalt and Carlos Lee were hurt (strained left oblique and strained right hip flexor, respectively). From the AP report, "Oswalt didn't know if the injury would sideline him for long, but he was sure of one thing — 'The way it feels right now — it don't feel great,' he said. 'This is the first oblique I've had. I don't think I tore it, but it doesn't feel well.' The good news is that the Astros hung on to win and beat the Padres, who are just half a game ahead of the Phillies in the Wild Card race.
Long night at the 222, eh Pat? Ordinarily, I'd rib Pat Burrell for losing his glove in the crowd while trying to field a Freddy Sanchez homer to deep left (in his inimitable Pat Burrell way, he hopped to try and catch the thing and a Bucco fan slapped his glove out of the way) but he had a two-run homer of his own. Too bad it wasn't enough, and the Pirates topped the Phillies 11-6. Grandpa Jamie Moyer was credited with six earned runs. Is that any way to treat an octogenarian?? Adding to the Phils' injury woes was Mike Zagurski, who fielded a ground ball badly and landed on the DL with a strained hammy.
Rocket Man, burning out his fuse up here alone (dear God, that was hacky). Texas Gal's guy Roger Clemens won his first game back from suspension. Baby Tiger Cameron Maybin got his first major league homer off Roger, and Roger also bestowed on him his first major league necktie. Class act, that Clemens is.
I'm just looking out for my fellow blogger. Finally in the annals of old blowhard pitchers, Curt Schilling got his first win since his one-hitter in May, and the Red Sox doubled up the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in a 10-5 victory. Beeg Papi had a salami (he also hit a grand slam in the sixth inning.) Texas Gal sent us this photo from atop the Monster of Schill warming up. At least I think it's him. He's very tiny.
