Mandatory Credit: Cary Edmondson-Imagn Images Athletics outfielder Tyler Soderstrom is done for the season and will undergo season-ending left hip surgery on Friday.
Soderstrom has been dealing with an impingement in the hip and was placed on the 10-day injured list on Sunday. It marked the second time this season he had gone on the IL due to the hip issues.
Soderstrom visited a hip specialist in Los Angeles on Monday, leading to the decision to call it a season.
Soderstrom, 24, batted .245 with 19 homers and 56 RBIs in 109 games. He ends the season with an 11-game hitting streak.
The injury setback is the latest to plague the A's during a disappointing season.
Two of the team's other top players -- All-Star catcher Shea Langeliers (knee), two-time All-Star designated hitter Brent Rooker -- are done for the season, and All-Star first baseman Nick Kurtz (right thumb) is highly unlikely to return.
Also, shortstop Jacob Wilson (left shoulder) is expected to undergo surgery following the season. He might be shut down prior to the end of the campaign.
After Soderstrom was placed on the injured list, A's manager Mark Kotsay discussed the team's bad luck when it comes to its core players.
"I've never seen it before," Kotsay said before it was known Soderstrom would need season-ending surgery. "Having four of your Opening Day players having injuries that impact their seasons like this, and all at once.
"Generally, you can go through timeframes with guys in and out of the lineup. But I've never seen a group of players end up with injuries like this that are impacting the majority of their seasons."
In 2025, Soderstrom batted .276 with career highs of 25 homers, 34 doubles and 93 RBIs in 158 games. He signed a seven-year, $86 million extension following the season.
