Atlanta FaZe secure 3-peat at CDL Major 2
The Atlanta FaZe captured their third consecutive Call of Duty League Stage 2 Major championship on Sunday, sweeping the Vancouver Surge in the grand final to take home $150,000.
The FaZe also extended their series win streak in LAN events to 13 in the process, a CDL record according to Esports Illustrated.
The Surge and FaZe faced each other earlier in the day, as well, in the upper-bracket final. That match was much more competitive, however, going the full five maps. The Surge opened with a 250-164 win on Vault Hardpoint before Atlanta won the next two, 6-4 on Red Card Search and Destroy and 3-1 on Protocol Control. The Surge forced a fifth map with a 150-168 win on Red Card Hardpoint, but Atlanta took the match with a 6-5 win on Protocol Search and Destroy.
The opening match of the day saw the best team in group play swept out of the playoffs, as the Toronto Ultra swept the LA Thieves, who were 7-0 in qualifying play, in a lower-bracket semifinal. Toronto took Protocol Hardpoint 250-115 before winning 6-4 on Hacienda Search and Destroy and 3-0 on Protocol Control.
The Surge and Ultra clashed in the lower bracket final for a chance to face off against the FaZe in the grand final. Vancouver got on the board first with a 250-239 win on Protocol Hardpoint but Toronto responded with a 6-4 victory on Protocol Control. However, the Surge won the next two rounds to secure a 3-1 overall victory -- 3-1 on Vault Control and 250-149 on Hacienda Hardpoint.
The FaZe and Surge rematch in the final was a far cry from their first meeting, however, as Atlanta won 250-193 on Protocol Hardpoint, 6-1 on Skyline Search and Destroy, 3-2 on Protocol Control and 250-137 on Hacienda Hardpoint in the best-of-seven match.
McArthur "Cellium" Jovel led FaZe in the final, posting a match-high 98 kills and plus-41 kill-death ratio.
