Mandatory Credit: Geoff Burke-Imagn Images Frances Tiafoe was nearly unbeatable on his first serve as he took down No. 5 seed Taylor Fritz 6-4, 6-4 in an all-American final at the Terra Wortmann Open for the biggest win of his career Sunday in Halle, Germany.
Tiafoe, who upset second-seeded Canadian and French Open quarterfinalist Felix Auger-Aliassime two rounds earlier, won the first ATP 500 title of his career and his first title of any kind in three years.
Fritz had a 12-8 edge in total aces, but Tiafoe won an overwhelming 32 of his 35 first-service points (91.4%), never facing break point. Tiafoe will rise to No. 19 in the ATP rankings Monday.
HSBC Championships
No. 7 seed Francisco Cerundolo of Argentina ended Tommy Paul's nine-match winning streak at The Queen's Club with a 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-3 victory in the final in London.
Cerundolo broke Paul's serve in the 10th game of the second set to tie the match. He then raced ahead 5-2 in the third set before winning on his fifth match point. It is Cerundolo's first ATP 500 title.
The eighth-seeded American won this event in 2024 and did not play in 2025 due to injury, but his attempt at a second title in as many starts was thwarted by Cerundolo, who kept himself in it by saving 8 of 10 break points. Paul, meanwhile, saved 8 of 12.
Vanda Pharmaceuticals Mallorca Championships
There were three main-draw matches Sunday to kick off the first round in Spain, and both seeded players in action were shown early exits.
Italian Lorenzo Sonego upset No. 7 seed Mariano Navone of Argentina 7-6 (2), 2-6, 6-4 in about two hours and 54 minutes, while Portugal's Nuno Borges swept French No. 8 seed Adrian Mannarino 6-2, 6-2. The other match saw Germany's Yannick Hanfmann edge Paraguay's Adolfo Daniel Vallejo 7-6 (2), 7-6 (2).
