Barbora Krejcikova tops hometown hopeful Maria Sakkari for Athens title

Czech No. 3 seed Barbora Krejcikova took down No. 4 seed Maria Sakkari of Greece 7-6 (5), 6-3 to claim the Vanda Pharmaceuticals Athens Open title on Sunday.

Sakkari is an Athens native and was pursuing her first WTA title since September 2023, when she won in Guadalajara, Mexico.

The crowd was with the 30-year-old hometown hero, but Krejcikova had other plans, as she rallied from a 4-1 hole in the first set to force the tiebreaker and overcome a 3-2 deficit to win it narrowly. After Sakkari broke Krejcikova's serve in the third game of the second set, Krejcikova immediately broke back and went on to take the final three games of the match.

Krejcikova, the 2021 French Open and 2024 Wimbledon champion, went 3-for-3 in converting break points en route to her ninth WTA singles title.

Inclement weather Sunday in Iasi, Romania, postponed the final of this tournament. The match between Spain's Paula Badosa and Egypt's Mayar Sherif was rescheduled for Monday.
