Pirates at Orioles

When Pittsburgh plays Baltimore, always take the Under… oh wait, that’s in the NFL. The baseball version does not quite rise to that level. But we do have an interesting pitching matchup here as Paul Skenes takes his talents to the Inner Harbor vs. Tyler Wells making his second start back from TJ surgery.

Skenes has lived up to his billing and then some as he has a 1.98 ERA and 0.94 WHIP fully backed by pretty much everything. And he's been rolling lately even by his standards, He’s given up just three earned runs over his last 4 starts, with 29 K’s vs. just 3 walks in 25 innings.

With Wells, we only have one start to go on, but he was very good vs. a tough Padres lineup. He went 5 innings and yielded 2 runs on 5 hits with no walks and 4. For his career, Wells has a 4.05 ERA with an elite 1.04 WHIP.

The best news for these SPs is that they get to face pretty weak lineups. The Pirates were a little hot recently, but have now lost 4 straight and scored just 7 runs total in those games. Back to August 1st they’re slashing .241/.324/.382 with just 30 homers, the 2nd lowest total in MLB. The Orioles for their part are just .226/.302/.372 since trading 3 regulars at the deadline. The total is low, but I just don’t see much offense in this game.

Brewers at Rangers

Pick: Under 7.5 (-115 Fanatics)

I guess I have a theme today; roll with the Unders. Merrill Kelly has pitched to a 2.98 ERA and 0.99 WHIP in 7 starts since coming over to Texas at the deadline. He’s on a run of 5 straight Quality Starts. His metrics suggest he’s not quite that good as he has a 20.8% K% and opponents have just a .224 BABIP.

The Brewers roll out their ace Freddy Peralta, and he has not allowed an earned run in his last 5 starts. He has occasional walk issues with a 9.4% BB% on the year, but he’s pitched through him fantastically well as he’s got a 2.50 ERA and 1.07 WHIP. That’s thanks to an excellent 27.1% K% and his ability to induce weak contact.

The Rangers have stayed competitive through a rash of injuries, but it's a really depleted lineup with Corey Seager, Marcus Semien and Adolis Garcia all on the IL.
