Big inning lifts Brewers over Padres to avoid sweep

Blake Perkins' two-run single keyed a five-run second inning that enabled the visiting Milwaukee Brewers to avoid a four-game series sweep and post a 6-2 victory over the San Diego Padres on Sunday

Tobias Myers (5-2) pitched five solid innings to pick up the win, allowing five hits and a run with no walks and three strikeouts. Three relievers finished up as Milwaukee denied San Diego its first four-game sweep of the Brewers in franchise history.

San Diego starter Michael King (5-5) was tagged with the loss after permitting nine hits and five runs over six innings. The right-hander walked one and fanned eight.

The game was decided early as the Brewers pieced together six hits in the second, doing most of their damage with two outs. Sal Frelick initiated scoring with a one-out RBI single to left that plated Willy Adames.

After Gary Sanchez took a third strike, Perkins blooped his big hit down the left-field line to score Joey Ortiz and Frelick. Brice Turang lined a triple into the right-field corner to score Perkins, and Tyler Black grounded an RBI single up the middle to cap the outburst.

Myers controlled the first part of the game without appearing to dominate it, getting a spate of routine outs until the Padres got on the board in the fifth with three two-out singles. Luis Arraez's hit delivered Ha-Seong Kim with their first run.

But Myers quieted the sellout crowd after falling behind Jurickson Profar 2-0, getting him to wave at a 2-2 changeup to end the inning.

Milwaukee added an insurance run in the seventh on a two-out RBI single by Jake Bauers that scored Jackson Chourio.

San Diego picked up its other run in the eighth on Manny Machado's sacrifice fly that plated Profar.

Perkins, Frelick, Ortiz, Bauers and Chourio each bagged two of the Brewers' 14 hits. Arraez collected a pair of hits for the Padres, giving him a National League-high 32 multiple-hit games this year.

Fernando Tatis Jr. (quad/elbow) missed his second straight game for San Diego.
