It might not — yet — have the online fanaticism and cachet of baseball, but the NFL and its fans are starting to catch up in the world of team-devoted blogs. To this end, Deadspin salutes these modem-addled souls and proudly presents Blogdom's Best, given to the most outstanding blog for each NFL team. There are fewer than there are for baseball, but they're out there, if you look. If you would like to nominate a blog (yours, even) for selection, just let us know at [email protected]. Today: The Kansas City Chiefs.

If you think you know how the Kansas City Chiefs got their nickname, you're probably wrong. Here's the story that we heard around the campfire: The Dallas Texans moved to Kansas City in 1963. The name "Chiefs" was selected by a fan contest and is derived from the then-Mayor of Kansas City, H. Roe Bartle. Bartle was the founder of the Native American-based honor society known as The Tribe of Mic-O-Say within the Boy Scouts of America organization, which earned him the nickname, "The Chief," and was instrumental in persuading Lamar Hunt to move his team to Mid-America. It is said that Hunt actually considered keeping the team name as it was, and playing as the "Kansas City Texans." [ KCChiefs.com]

Wow. As Johnny Carson used to say: "Weird, wild stuff." But then, Chiefs fans are a weird, wild breed (George Blowfish: Chiefs Fan From Hell), and among the most fanatically devoted in the NFL. There are no shortage of quality Chiefs blogs out there — so many, in fact, that we're sure we probably missed a few. Sorry, Chiefs fans. We're not evil, like the Raiders. Just pressed for time. Our picks:

3. Chiefs Report. Long on original content, posts daily and exhibits an obvious devotion to its subject. For meat-and-potatoes Chiefs fans — substantive, not flashy. 2. Chiefs War Room. We wish they'd post more often on their main blog, but there's so many extras — from commentary to team history to a local restaurant guide — that one could get lost just browsing around. 1. Chiefs Warpath. The Big Daddy of Chiefs blogs — their "Raiders Suck" section alone is more expansive than most other entire blogs.
