Breach upset Thieves in CDL Stage 2 Major
The No. 8 seed Boston Breach pulled off a major upset over the No. 1 seed Los Angeles Thieves on Thursday during the quarterfinals of the Call of Duty League Stage 2 Major in Dallas.
The Thieves were a perfect 7-0 in qualifying play.
The Breach got a win on Hacienda Hardpoint, 250-230. Then, they went up 2-0 on a 6-4 Hacienda Search and Destroy victory. The Thieves finally got on the board with a 3-0 win on Vault Control, but the Breach put away the match 3-1 on a tightly contested 250-242 Skyline Hardpoint victory.
The Thieves will remain in the tournament, moving down to the lower bracket with a harder path to the grand final. The 12-team 4v4 tournament will run through Sunday.
There were two other upsets on the day. The No. 5 seed Vancouver Surge and No. 6 seed Cloud9 New York both took care of business with 3-0 sweeps of their respective opponents (No. 4 Carolina Royal Ravens, No. 3 Toronto Ultra).
The No. 2 seed Atlanta FaZe were the lone favorite to secure victory on Thursday, handling No. 7 Minnesota ROKKR 3-0. Two of their three wins came on the Red Card map.
Four teams remain in the upper bracket and two wins away from the grand final. On Saturday, the Breach will face off with the Surge, while FaZe will take on New York.
