Mandatory Credit: Benny Sieu-USA TODAY Sports Milwaukee Brewers left-hander Robert Gasser will undergo Tommy John surgery on Monday, becoming the team's third injured starter to miss the rest of the 2024 season.
The ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction surgery will be performed by Dr. Keith Meister in Dallas with a recovery time of about a year, MLB.com reported.
Brandon Woodruff (shoulder) and Wade Miley (Tommy John surgery) also won't return until 2025 for the Brewers, who lead the National League Central.
Gasser, 25, made his major league debut on May 10 and immediately impressed, posting a 2-0 record with a 2.57 ERA over five starts. In 28 innings, he struck out 16 and walked just one.
He last pitched June 1 in a no-decision against the Chicago White Sox and went on the 15-day injured list four days later due to a left flexor strain. The Brewers' No. 4 prospect, according to MLB Pipeline, Gasser started the minor league season on the injured list after dealing with bone spurs in his elbow during spring training.
Gasser consulted with noted surgeon Dr. Neal ElAttrache, who also recommended surgery. While Gasser initially considered a non-surgical repair, he decided that the sooner he had the surgery, the sooner he could return.
"When I weighed the options, it's like, even if I finished the year healthy, I would still have that lingering thought in the back of my head of, 'Am I really OK?'" Gasser said, per MLB.com. "Obviously, I want to pitch, but I want to do that 100 percent healthy, knowing everything is right."
