Bud Selig Is JACKED UP!
We can't quite break with the new windmill-tilting conventional wisdom that Bud Selig is secretly a great commissioner. He still seems more like Jack Lemmon's Shelly "the Machine" Levine to us; a sad old salesman who has himself in over his head. But he's starting to get some good press — finally — now that he's going after the players union on Those Devil Steroids. The New York Daily News reports that Selig will sign on to any anti-steroid legislation Congress might pass, no matter what the players union thinks. This could cause labor strife down the line, but the press is in his corner, because, you know, they need something to write about. Polls consistently show that fans don't really care about steroids, like, at all — they would be far more annoyed by a work stoppage — but with steroids, Mike Lupica has something to get fired up about on the SportsReporters, and that's all that really matters.
