Casper Ruud withdraws from U.S. Open due to back injury

Casper Ruud has withdrawn from the U.S. Open due to a back injury.

Seeded 19th in the tournament and a 2022 U.S. Open finalist, Ruud took to social media to announce his decision Sunday.

"Unfortunately, my back hasn't healed as quickly as we had hoped. We've been optimistic that I would recover in time, but my team and I have decided that we need to think long term and give my body the time it needs," the 27-year-old Norwegian wrote on Instagram. "I'm very sad to announce that I have to withdraw from this year's US Open singles event. It's never easy to miss a Grand Slam, but I know this is the right decision."

Ruud teamed with Diana Shnaider of Russia in a mixed doubles match at Flushing Meadows. They defeated Taylor Fritz and Jessica Pegula in the first round before falling to Andrey Rublev and Mirra Andreeva in the quarterfinals.

Lucky loser Arthur Gea, 21, of France will replace Ruud in the draw and face Juan Manuel Cerundolo in the first round.
