Diane Parry caps surprise run, wins Monterrey for first WTA title

Diane Parry capped her unexpected run through the Abierto GNP Seguros on Saturday night, beating second-seeded Elise Mertens 6-4, 0-6, 6-3 in Monterrey, Mexico, to win her first career WTA title.

Parry, ranked 50th in the world, was playing in her first career WTA Tour final. The Frenchwoman's best result previously this year was a semifinal appearance in Ostrava, Czech Republic.

The 23-year-old broke the Belgian Mertens' first serve in the first and third sets, taking a 3-0 lead both times. The two then traded service breaks both games before Parry was able to put her opponent away on serve.

In between, the 24th-ranked Mertens, 30, dominated the second set, taking advantage of four double faults and winning nine of 12 points on Parry's first serve.

Parry is scheduled to open U.S. Open play Monday against Viktorija Golubic of Switzerland while Mertens will face Spain's Kaitlin Quevedo on Tuesday.
