Donta Scott's big 2nd half pushes Maryland past Michigan

Donta Scott scored 20 of his 22 points in the second half to rally Maryland past Michigan 64-57 on Thursday in College Park, Md.

Scott finished 6-of-10 shooting and made all four of his 3-pointers in the second half to help the Terrapins (10-6, 2-3 Big Ten) overcome a 12-point halftime deficit. Maryland was just 1-of-11 from long range in the opening period.

Julian Reese paired 14 points with 13 rebounds for Maryland, while Jahmir Young added 12 points, five rebounds, five assists and two steals.

The Wolverines (6-10, 1-4) played their first game this season without guard Dug McDaniel, who was suspended earlier Thursday from road games indefinitely, according to coach Juwan Howard. McDaniel indicated it would be for Michigan's next six road games. Jaelin Llewellyn scored nine points starting in McDaniel's place.

Olivier Nkamhoua led the Wolverines with 18 points and seven rebounds. Terrance Williams II chipped in 10 points.

Maryland trailed 33-21 at halftime before Scott heated up to melt the deficit away.

Scott drilled two triples to pull Maryland within a possession, before he hit two free throws to cap the Terrapins' 23-11 run to open the second half. The burst tied the game at 44-44.

Maryland slid ahead 49-48 on the third trey from Scott, who struck again on the ensuing possession to put the Terrapins up 52-50 at the 7:13 mark.

Jamie Kaiser Jr. buried Maryland's sixth triple of the half, before Scott's spinning layup staked the Terrapins to their largest lead of the game at 58-51 with 4:49 to play.

Nkamhoua's jumper with 2:38 left cut Maryland's lead to 58-57, but his basket was the Wolverines' last of the game.

Reese blocked Nimari Burnett's layup with the Terrapins leading 60-57, and then converted two free throws on the other end to boost Maryland's lead to five with 23 seconds remaining.

Scott added two more free throws to seal the win.

The Terrapins finished 17-of-23 from the free-throw line compared to Michigan's 10-of-15.

Scott jolted the Terrapins with a lethal right-handed tomahawk over Llewellyn to put Maryland up 4-0. Scott's slam highlighted an otherwise dreary first eight minutes for both teams.

The Wolverines started 3-of-12 from the floor before Tarris Reed Jr's. dunk triggered a string of six straight makes that vaulted Michigan ahead 27-17 with four minutes left in the opening period.

Llewellyn banked in a trey from the left wing with nine seconds remaining to close the first half scoring.
