Mandatory Credit: Bill Streicher-Imagn Images Dustin Johnson will not attempt to qualify for the Open Championship next month at Royal Birkdale, ending a couple of impressive major streaks.
Johnson will be absent from a major for the first time since the 2017 Masters, ending a string of 38 straight major starts. He was one of the top players in the world in 2017 but injured his back in the week leading up to the Masters, prompting his withdrawal.
It also marks the first Open Championship without Johnson since he made his Open debut in 2009. He has played in all 16 Open Championships held since, tying for second in 2011 among his five top-10s in the event.
Johnson, 42, did not have an exemption into the major and needed to qualify to earn his place. He was in the field for a 36-hole final qualifier Tuesday at Dundonald Links in Scotland, but Monday brought the news that he had dropped out.
No reason was provided for his decision. And he was not the only LIV Golf member who decided to drop out, as David Puig of Spain and Carlos Ortiz of Mexico also won't go through with final qualifying.
Johnson is a former World No. 1 known for winning the 2016 U.S. Open and the 2020 Masters. He made the cut in all three of his major starts this year -- tying for 33rd at the Masters, tying for 44th at the PGA Championship and tying for 32nd at the U.S. Open. But he has not won a LIV Golf event since February 2024.
