The New York Giants will host the Philadelphia Eagles in a Thursday night divisional matchup. The Eagles continue to be one of the best teams in the NFC, posting a 4-1 record thus far. The Giants are working through a rebuild, and they’ve struggled with a 1-4 record through five games.

Philadelphia hasn’t been as good as most expected, but that’s been more of an offensive issue than their defense. Surprisingly, they do rank only 13th in the NFL in points allowed (.344) per play. Overall, they’re giving up 21.8 points per game.

This feels like it has more to do with their early-season schedule rather than any major defensive issues. They’ve held the Dallas Cowboys and Tampa Bay Buccaneers to only 20 and 25 points. They’ve also performed well against the Kansas City Chiefs (17), Los Angeles Rams (26), and Denver Broncos (21).

The Eagles will get their easiest matchup of the season against New York this week. The Giants rank third-last in the NFL in points (.266) per play this season. Granted, they’ve been better since Jaxson Dart took over, but their best game came against Dallas with Russell Wilson.

There are a few keys here as to why we’re taking the under on New York. First, both teams should be looking to establish the run in this game. It’s been easiest to beat both defenses on the ground early on, and both of these teams are likely to rely on the run for as long as possible.

The Eagles are also playing at one of the slowest paces in the NFL. If they’re able to get a comfortable lead, lean on the run, and slow the game down, it’s going to limit opportunities for the Giants.

The other aspect is potential pressure. New York grades out as one of the worst pass-blocking teams in the NFL, per PFF. Philadelphia also ranks as one of the best pass-rushing teams, meaning they could get to Jaxson Dart throughout this game.

As is the case with most rookies, Dart has struggled mightily when pressured. He’s 7/17 with 0 touchdowns, 1 interception, and 2.9 yards per attempt when pressured this season. It’s a limited sample, but it’s unlikely he’ll find elite success against a high-level defense.

This will be the easiest matchup of the season for the Philadelphia defense, and I don’t expect New York to suddenly become an elite red zone offense.
