Australia Shock Brazil, Knock Them Out Of The World Cup With Late Goal
Holy shit. Holy shit! Brazil are out of the World Cup! Australia are through to the quarterfinals!
It wasn’t supposed to go down like this. Brazil finished first in their group, while Australia finished second in the Group of Death. Brazil were expected to beat the Australians and advance, but in the 80th minute of a surprisingly even game, Brazil turned the ball over in the midfield. One pass later, Australian striker Lisa De Vanna was in on goal.
Her shot was saved, but her teammate, substitute Kyah Simon, calmly finished the rebound, and Australia led. Ten minutes later, the final whistle blew, and Australia were through.
There have been a lot of upsets this World Cup, but this is the biggest one of the knockout stages, and it’s also the biggest win in Australia’s history. Brazil looked all tournament long to be one of the best sides, but of course, that doesn’t matter now.
