Robert Wuhl Is Still Getting Work, Kind Of
Sometimes we feel bad for Robert Wuhl. Sure, "Arliss" was pretty horrible, but the guy was in Batman and Bull Durham, and all he has to show for it are some lingering hangers-on friendships with past-their-prime former athletes. (We doubt LeBron ever knew his show existed.) But hey: At least he gets to be used in corporate marketing!
Modell's Sporting Goods was trying to secure a marketing deal with the Boston Celtics, and to secure the deal, they brought in Wuhl, in character.
Apparently, Wuhl, wearing a disguise, was in full "Arli$$" mode during the meeting - lots of yelling, swearing and demanding more and more and more from the Green Team's marketing men. Finally - when things really started to get nasty - Wuhl ripped off his disguise to reveal his secret identity. But [Celtics president Rich]Gotham still wasn't convinced he was being had. "I kept asking myself during the meeting, 'OK, I really must be confused, because he's not really an agent, right?' " Gotham said, describing Wuhl's hard-nosed negotiating tactics. "First time I've negotiated with a fictional character, I think."
Afterwards, Wuhl wandered around the Celtics offices for a while, interrupting bored secretaries with, "You know, I was on a TV show once. With Shaq. SHAQ!"
