LeBron James Joining the Warriors Would Tarnish His Retirement Tour
We knew the LeBron James retirement tour would be a grand spectacle filled with drama, but I didn’t expect it to include him wearing his former rival's jersey.
Betting markets now have the Golden State Warriors as the favorite to land LeBron after he announced that he would only leave the Lakers for the Warriors if they also brought Anthony Davis to San Francisco.
Recently, it felt like the Warriors would be a distant third team to land LeBron, with it really coming down to whether he wanted to stay in Los Angeles or have his retirement tour back home with Cleveland. Now, it seems that if the Warriors are able to move Jimmy Butler to the Wizards, along with draft compensation, LeBron would be willing to join his former arch-nemesis.
No matter where LeBron plays basketball during the 2026-27 season, I will still see him as a top two player of all time. I think he’s done more than enough to pass Michael Jordan, but if you still think Michael is first, it won’t be the most insane thing I’ve ever heard.
However, the overreactions online with people saying he could move down in the GOAT conversations with this move are insane. I don’t think this impacts his on-court legacy; I think it just insanely tarnishes his off-court resume.
LeBron’s retirement tour will only be done correctly back home in Cleveland. Lakers fans have disrespected him every moment he’s been in Los Angeles, Miami fans are too busy partying to show up in time for tip-off, and if he went to Golden State, it would be a complete slap in the face to Cavaliers faithful.
Most people either love or hate LeBron, but even the most ardent LeBron defenders would have trouble justifying him joining forces with Steph Curry to end his career. This past postseason run, it felt like he finally won over some of his most fervent haters, and a move to Golden State would immediately kill any of that goodwill.
Returning to Cleveland makes the most sense, but if he was joining an actual contender to try and be the final piece for a contender, I think I’d be okay with that as well. But Golden State won’t be a contender next season, even with LeBron and Anthony Davis.
I don’t get this potential move for LeBron. Give your haters new ammo, while spitting on the fans that will always love you the most. Such a lame way to end a storied career.
