The Celtics Probably Earned The Best Win Of Their Season Last Night
Jeff Green's buzzer-beating three gave the Celtics a shocking 111-110 win over the Heat. Considering the expectations for Boston's squad, it could end up being the Celtics' best win of the season.
Boston kept tight with Miami for the majority of the game. After Chris Bosh missed a jumper with 21 seconds left in the fourth, the Celtics, trailing 108-106, had a chance to at least send it to overtime. Kelly Olynyk had the opportunity to tie, but he tried to draw contact instead of finishing the shot. LeBron James reeled in the rebound and Olynyk fouled him with three seconds left. But it still wasn't over.
James made both free throws for a 110-106 lead, but Gerald Wallace cut the lead back to two with a layup. Wallace immediately fouled Dwyane Wade, leaving 0.6 seconds on the clock. Wade missed the first free throw, and tried to put the ball in play and end the game by quickly tossing his second attempt at the rim. It didn't work. His shot only hit the backboard, a dead ball, giving Boston the ball once again. The Celtics had a second chance.
This time, they came through. As Jeff Green took a route to the far side of the court, Gerald Wallace tossed a pass over Chris Bosh's outstretched arms, landing into Green's hands. Green tossed up a three-point shot as he fell out of bounds, the buzzer sounded, and the crowd at AmericanAirlines Arena—or what was left of it—was hit with shock as Celtics players flipped out on the court like they'd won the championship.
Yes, it's November. No, this isn't indicative of the Heat's talent. Yes, the Celtics will still probably miss the playoffs. But for that one game, after an 0-4 start and frustration within the team, it was a win worth celebrating for Boston. It's in the best interest of the Celtics to keep losing games for a chance at Andrew Wiggins or Jabari Parker, but the win was worth slimming those lottery percentages a little bit for this final scene:
