Who Wants The Worst Head Coaching Position In FBS Football?
The UMass Minutemen football program left the FCS for the FBS two years ago, ditching the Colonial Athletic Association for the MAC. It's been a rough two years.
So, it wasn't surprising when Charley Molnar was fired as head coach of the Minutemen today. In his two seasons, the team amassed a 2-22 record. Those two wins: a victory over 1-9 Akron in 2012, and the other against 0-5 Miami (Ohio) this year. Despite beating those two, the Minutemen are still worse than either of them; the Zips and RedHawks have each had more than two total wins in the past two seasons. UMass fucking sucks. And now it needs a new coach.
The question is, though, who wants this job? Which guy wants to build a foundation for a severely overmatched group that can't even beat teams from its former, lesser conference? (Seriously, UMass lost to CAA opponent Maine in this season's home opener, 24-14.) It's not going to turn around in one season; some sap is going to have to devote multiple years of his life to a program that gets punched around regularly. The university has to pick a guy who's dealt with humiliation in the past, a coach whose ego won't be wrecked by inevitable blowouts in the beginning of his tenure. Maybe it can convince this guy.
