Escalator Speeds Up, Separates Feuding Soccer Hooligans
This is like the "Yakety Sax" shrimp video but with Swedish soccer hooligans instead of a crustacean. Following a match between rivals Malmö FF and Helsingborgs IF that ended in a 3-0 Malmö win, fans of both teams got a little rowdy on their way into the subway. The place also happened to be lousy with cops ready to control the crowd when, suddenly, the escalator carrying many fans sped up and whisked the fans away.
It was initially believed that the cops actually sped up the escalator to disperse the crowd, but Linda Carlén of the Swedish Transportation Authority denied the rumors.
"The only thing that can be altered from the outside is to turn on the stairs to normal speed after somebody has pressed the emergency stop button," she told SVT, adding that no one was injured in the accident.
STA later said the increased weight, due to the number of people on the escalator, caused a brake failure.
