Frederik Andersen (22 saves) helps Hurricanes blank Rangers
Jan 28, 2025; New York, New York, USA; New York Rangers center Filip Chytil (72) collides with Carolina Hurricanes goaltender Frederik Andersen (31) in the first period at Madison Square Garden. Mandatory Credit: Wendell Cruz-Imagn Images Frederik Andersen made 22 saves, Andrei Svechnikov scored in the opening minute of the first period and the final minute of the second as the visiting Carolina Hurricanes pulled away for a 4-0 victory over the New York Rangers on Tuesday night.
The Hurricanes won for the fifth time in six games (5-0-1) largely thanks to Andersen, who won his third straight game since missing two months recovering from knee surgery.
Svechnikov registered his third multi-goal game this season by scoring on Carolina's first shot on goal 56 seconds into the contest and again with 31 seconds remaining in the second period.
Taylor Hall and Mikko Rantanen registered their first points since being acquired from the Chicago Blackhawks and Colorado Avalanche, respectively, in Friday's three-team trade.
Sebastian Aho and Seth Jarvis scored 1:26 apart in the third. Svechnikov set up Aho's goal and notched his third three-point game this season.
Andersen highlighted his 28th career regular-season shutout by scrambling across the crease to make a left skate save during a New York power play in the second period. He prevented Chris Kreider from scoring into an open net with 8:57 remaining when the Hurricanes held a 1-0 lead.
The Rangers lost their second straight following a 10-game points streak and took their second regulation loss in 12 games (7-2-3). New York was blanked for the third time in regulation this season and first time in regulation on home ice since a 4-0 loss to the Washington Capitals on Dec. 27, 2022.
New York goalie Igor Shesterkin made 22 saves but the Hurricanes scored following misplays by the Rangers.
Shortly after the opening faceoff, Artemi Panarin was pressured into a turnover in the neutral zone by Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Svechnikov. Hall moved the puck along the left wing and Svechnikov used a screen by Kotkaniemi to get a shot from between the circles over Shesterkin.
After Vincent Trocheck saw the puck go off defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere's skate on a breakaway, Rantanen faked a shot to get Shesterkin to commit and fed Svechnikov. After eluding Braden Schneider and Reilly Smith, Svechnikov sent a backhander into the open net.
Aho made it 3-0 at 1:04 of the third following an errant clearing pass by Kreider. Jarvis scored 2 1/2 minutes into the third shortly after a giveaway by Mika Zibanejad behind the net.
