Georgia Southern coach Charlie Henry gets 4-year extension
Georgia Southern's head coach Charlie Henry calls out to players during the first half in the game against Michigan State on Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2023, at the Breslin Center in East Lansing. Georgia Southern men's basketball coach Charlie Henry signed a four-year contract extension through the 2029-30 season.
The school announced the contract news on Thursday but did not disclose financial terms.
"Today is a great day for our men's basketball program as we announce the contract extension for Charlie Henry," athletic director Chris Davis said. "Charlie has brought the stability and leadership that's essential in today's college basketball landscape. Each season has seen consistent improvements under his tutelage that have been record-setting on and off the court.
"His historic run in the Sun Belt Tournament that captivated all of Eagle Nation is a clear reflection of the belief, toughness and culture that he has built. Just as important, he's consistently shown the ability to manage and develop rosters each year, which speaks to his adaptability and vision."
The Eagles finished the regular season at 16-15 and 8-10 in the Sun Belt Conference. To qualify for the NCAA Tournament, the No. 10-seeded Eagles would have needed to win six consecutive games in the conference tournament. Instead, they won five, losing to No. 1 seed Troy 77-61 in the final.
With the five tournament wins, Georgia Southern was 21-16 -- the first 20-win season for the program in seven years.
Only UConn and NC State had won five consecutive conference tournament games prior to Georgia Southern's run.
Georgia Southern hired Henry, then an assistant coach at Alabama, in March 2023. His prior coaching experience included stops with the Chicago Bulls, Iowa State and the Windy City Bulls of the G League.
After just nine wins in his first season and 17 in the second, Henry has a 47-56 record at Georgia Southern.
