Giants place INF Casey Schmitt (torn meniscus) on 10-day IL
Jul 27, 2026; San Francisco, California, USA; San Francisco Giants third baseman Casey Schmitt (10) sits in the dugout after suffering an injury during the second inning against the Milwaukee Brewers at Oracle Park. San Francisco Giants infielder Casey Schmitt could miss the rest of the season after tearing the meniscus cartilage in his left knee during Monday night's game against the Milwaukee Brewers.
Schmitt, 27, had been enjoying the best season of his four-year career with personal bests in batting average (.271), home runs (21), stolen bases (9), slugging percentage (.483) and OPS (.784) in 98 games.
Not only did Schmitt carve out a spot in the heart of the Giants' batting order, he provided defensive versatility by splitting his time between left field, third base, second base, shortstop and first.
While placing Schmitt on the 10-day injured list, the Giants promoted infielder Osleivis Basabe from Triple-A Sacramento. Basabe, 25, has not appeared in the big leagues since posting a .218 average with one home run and 12 RBIs in 31 games for the Tampa Bay Rays.
Basabe is batting.268 with five homers, 12 stolen bases and 43 RBIs in 75 games for the River Cats. He is expected to help the Giants at third base while they await the return of Matt Chapman from the 10-day IL.
