Mandatory Credit: Brad Rempel-Imagn Images Jose Morales buried the winner in the seventh round of penalty kicks to propel Guatemala over Canada and into the semifinals of the CONCACAF Gold Cup on Sunday in Minneapolis.
Following a 1-1 draw, Canada and Guatemala went goal for goal through the first four rounds. Both their players missed in the fifth round, with Guatemala goalkeeper Kenderson Navarro saving Cyle Larin's attempt before Jose Pinto missed high.
The two sides made another round of shots before Canada's Luc De Fougerolles hit the post. Morales responded by delivering a shot just off the center of the net, with goalie Dayne St. Clair diving too far to his left, for the final 6-5 edge.
Canada played the second half with 10 men as Jacob Shaffelburg was shown a red card four minutes into first-half stoppage time for a foul on Stheven Robles.
Rubio Rubin delivered the equalizer in the 69th minute for Guatemala, which will face the winner between the United States and Costa Rica in the semifinals.
Jonathan David had put the favored Canadians in front on a 30th-minute penalty kick goal into the bottom right corner of the net. It's the second straight Gold Cup that Canada failed to reach the semis.
