Mandatory Credit: Jerry Lai-Imagn Images Holger Rune of Denmark suffered a season-ending left leg injury Saturday while playing Ugo Humbert in the Nordic Open semifinals in Stockholm.
In a text message to members of the Danish media, Aneke Rune said she was told by medical staff that her son had an Achilles injury.
"They are completely sure that it is a torn Achilles tendon, so it's of course very bad. Holger is, of course, completely devastated," Aneke Rune wrote, according to Flashscore.
"They say they can see it with the naked eye," she added.
Entering the match, the 22-year-old Rune had been nursing a left hamstring issue.
The injury occurred in the second set, with Rune leading the Frenchman 6-4, 2-2 and the game tied at 40. On the next point, Rune ran to catch up to Humbert's shot and slightly jumped as he hit the ball, then came down limping before grabbing his lower left leg.
Here's a second look at the moment that forced Holger Rune to retire against Ugo Humbert.

He was unable to continue and helped off the court in tears. He was heard telling the physio treating him that he heard something pop in the area of his Achilles.
Rune, ranked No. 11 in the world, was seeking his fifth career win and second win of the season, victorious at the Barcelona Open in April. Humbert will challenge either No. 2 seed Casper Ruud of Norway or No. 3 Denis Shapovalov of Canada in the final on Sunday.
"It was not the way I wanted to win," Humbert said. "I'm super disappointed for Holger, I hope he is going to be OK. I wish him a speedy recovery. It was a great match. He was playing a little bit better than me, but I'm really sorry for Holger."
