How Dopamine Detox Affects Your Gains?
The first thing to understand is that dopamine detox isn’t removing dopamine from your system; it’s reducing the overstimulation we have daily. Cheap hits are scrolling through TikTok, bingeing on Netflix, or even texting during workouts. Can this affect your progress?
Dopamine, Motivation & Gym: What’s the Link?
It’s great when you don’t need motivation for the gym, and everything is just a routine. But for those who lack discipline, dopamine can be a good starting point.
People start skipping workouts when their brain is constantly rewarded with low-effort dopamine. This includes social media, gambling, gaming, etc. The goal of detox is to reset the reward system and essentially start over again.
Detox doesn’t have to be hard to manage, there are numerous ways to make it fun. It will eventually feel pleasant once you see the benefits.
My 10-Day Detox: No Phone, No Music, No Socials
No phone? “I work on my phone”. I’ve heard this sentence thousands of times, so don’t worry, no phone applies only for the gym hours and an hour before. No pump-up songs or social media during training.
You can finish what you need to do on your phone an hour before going to the gym, this is one of the most important and hardest steps I had to make. Honestly, it took a couple of days before I actually started doing it, because I would always check my phone when I heard that notification sound.
Removing the temptation worked for me, so I just placed my phone on silent mode in the locker. Some gyms have pump-up playlists, but it’s easier to isolate yourself compared to having headphones.
It will feel boring at first, all you’ll do is walk around the gym and wait for another set. But try to focus on your breathing and your thoughts. After the first week, it becomes natural.
Sometimes maybe good, sometimes maybe shit
If you don’t believe in magical supplements that give you a 6 pack in a week, you shouldn’t believe that dopamine detox can work wonders as well. From that in mind, as our friend Gattuso said “sometimes maybe shit”.
Getting used to dopamine detox is also difficult. But, is it worth it? I would say, definitely yes. Not because you will impact your working habits in a good way. Instead, the main difference is that you will feel better while training and throughout the day.
Pros and Cons, Dos and Don’ts
There’s no need to watch hundreds of videos on dopamine detox and go monk mode. A good tip is to think of it as dopamine discipline instead of detoxification, so cut out cheap dopamine for something useful.
Pros:
- Improves focus during workouts
- Boosts internal motivation
- Builds better habits
- Makes progress more rewarding
Cons:
- Can lower short-term motivation
- Not sustainable for everyone
- Slow start
- Doing it with someone is easier
If it does not work for you, just change the strategy. Write down the things that are too distracting and find a healthy solution for them. Set a time limit, like 7 days or more, when you have to do this, and then write down the results and how you feel. It will help you visualize the outcome and possibly continue working on it.
