HS Hoops Team May Boycott Its Racist Coach
At Richmond Heights High School in Cleveland, the boys' basketball team has started the season undefeated, at 15-0. But earlier this week, the players and their parents came together to attempt to unseat their coach, Jason Popp, as he allegedly calls them the n-word on a regular basis.
Among the various accusations: Popp told his team before a game that their opponents expected them "to play like n—-ers, which you are," and told a few of his players that their teammate's father was "a drunk, and the apartment he lives in is probably government housing." On Monday, the boys' parents wrote a letter to the school board charging Popp with "inappropriate language, as well as racial and economic harassment." They also attended a school board meeting to voice their concerns, and successfully postponed last night's game until Friday — so the unblemished record still stands. The Spartans have also threatened to boycott the remainder of their season if Popp is not relieved of his duties.
Superintendent Linda Hardwick, who seems to have some problems of her own, said that she spoke to Popp and that he "is willing to talk and address the issues the parents have brought up. But he wants to get this settled because he cares about these kids." He must have a soft spot for winning, too.
