Indiana takes charge late, extends misery for No. 13 Purdue
Purdue's Trey Kaufman-Renn (4) is tied up by Indiana's Malik Reneau (5) and Trey Galloway (32) during the Indiana versus Purdue mens basketball game at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall on Sunday, Feb. 23, 2025. Malik Reneau and Trey Galloway led five players in double figures with 15 points each and Indiana overcame a 12-point halftime deficit to stretch No. 13 Purdue's losing streak to four games with a 73-58 Big Ten Conference victory Sunday at Bloomington, Ind.
Myles Rice and reserve Oumar Ballo scored 12 points apiece, while Luke Goode added 11 as the Hoosiers (16-11, 7-9 Big Ten) thrust themselves into the discussion for an NCAA Tournament at-large bid by outscoring the Boilermakers 48-21 in the second half.
Indiana made 64 percent of its field goals after halftime and made 18 trips to the foul line in the second half, hitting 13. The Hoosiers also forced 11 turnovers in the second half and cashed those in for 19 points.
Goode's layup gave Indiana the lead for good with 14:39 left and the Hoosiers pushed the margin as high as 18 points down the stretch.
Fletcher Loyer scored a game-high 20 points for Purdue (19-9, 11-6), which absorbed its second straight 0-2 week. Myles Colvin added 11 off the bench but the Boilermakers connected on just 6 of 20 (30 percent) shots in the second half.
Purdue's top two scorers endured rough days. Trey Kaufman-Renn managed just nine points before fouling out with 4:30 left and Braden Smith was held to eight while committing six turnovers.
The first half played out in two distinct parts - the first 11 minutes that Indiana controlled and the final nine minutes that were completely dominated by Purdue.
The Hoosiers played through Reneau early and were rewarded with six points and a pair of assists in the first 8 1/2 minutes as they established a 19-13 lead. They still led 21-16 as Galloway popped a short jumper in the lane at the 9:08 mark.
But beginning with Colvin's long 2-pointer on the next possession, the Boilermakers dominated the remainder of the half. That started a 21-4 burst that Loyer capped with a 3-pointer with 20 seconds left, giving them a 37-25 cushion at the break.
