Jags QB Trevor Lawrence 'pretty sore,' will limit throwing

Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence said Wednesday that his shoulder is still "pretty sore" and that he doesn't plan to throw much this week in practice in the hopes of being ready to play Sunday.

Lawrence is dealing with a sprained AC joint in his right shoulder, an injury he sustained in last week's loss to Tampa Bay.

"You never know how things are going to heal up and how quickly you're going to recover, but right now it's still pretty sore and still kind of working through the beginning stages of getting back," he said. "We'll kind of see how it goes."

Lawrence was at practice Wednesday in shorts and a hoodie while C.J. Beathard took first-team reps.

Lawrence has not missed a game in his NFL career, starting 49 consecutive games since being selected No. 1 overall in 2021.

Beathard will draw the start if Lawrence can't go Sunday against the visiting Carolina Panthers. Beathard's last NFL start came with the San Francisco 49ers on Jan. 3, 2021, the final game of the regular season.

Lawrence sustained his latest injury while stretching to convert a fourth-and-1 in the third quarter of Sunday's 30-12 loss at Tampa Bay. He landed out of bounds on his right shoulder. Lawrence finished 17-for-29 passing for 211 yards, two interceptions and a lost fumble against the Buccaneers.

He has also dealt with a high ankle sprain and a concussion this season but has not missed any games. The 2021 No. 1 overall pick has thrown for 3,736 yards with 19 touchdowns and 12 interceptions in 15 starts.

Jacksonville has lost four in a row but still leads the AFC South based on tiebreakers. The Jaguars, Indianapolis Colts and Houston Texans are all 8-7.

For depth, the Jaguars signed quarterback Matt Barkley on Tuesday from the New York Giants' practice squad. Barkley, who has appeared in at least one game in six different NFL seasons, last played in 2020 for the Buffalo Bills.
