Mandatory Credit: Susan Mullane-USA TODAY Sports Jannik Sinner officially rose to No. 1 in the ATP rankings on Monday, becoming the first Italian to hold the spot.
Sinner, 22, displaced Novak Djokovic of Serbia at No. 1, followed by Carlos Alcaraz at No. 2. The 21-year-old Alcaraz, of Spain, moved up a spot after winning his first French Open and third Grand Slam tournament overall on Sunday.
Djokovic fell to No. 3 after a knee injury forced him to pull out of the tournament at Roland Garros ahead of the quarterfinal round. He has since had surgery to repair a torn meniscus.
The computerized rankings began in 1973 and are based on the number of points players earn on the court.
This season Sinner is 33-3 with three titles, including the Australian Open.
"It represents a great result of work ethic. It was one of my goals for myself and my team this year," said Sinner, who began the year at No. 4. "The most important goal is always to improve as a player and as a person, surrounding myself with great people. I think I can be very happy and pleased with what I am doing as well as my team. In the last period I've played some really good tennis. I'm very happy to be in this position."
Alexander Zverev of Germany, who lost the French Open final to Alcaraz in five sets, remained at No. 4, and Russian Daniil Medvedev stayed at No. 5.
Sinner will go into Wimbledon as No. 1 when the tournament opens July 1.
Sinner is the 29th person ever to hold the No. 1 ranking, joining five other active players who hold the distinction: Djokovic, Medvedev, Alcaraz, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray.
Djokovic, a 24-time Grand Slam winner, holds the record for most weeks at No. 1 with 428, followed by Roger Federer of Switzerland (310) and Pete Sampras (286).
