Josh, Bo Naylor push Guardians past White Sox
Apr 10, 2024; Cleveland, Ohio, USA; Cleveland Guardians first base Josh Naylor (22) celebrates his solo home run in the fourth inning against the Chicago White Sox at Progressive Field. credits: David Richard-USA TODAY Sports Josh Naylor delivered a game-tying RBI double in the 10th inning shortly before his brother, Bo, smacked a walk-off, run-scoring single that sent the Cleveland Guardians to a 7-6 victory over the visiting Chicago White Sox on Wednesday night.
Both brothers homered during Cleveland's three-run fourth inning, and they then came through in the 10th against ex-Guardian Bryan Shaw (0-1).
Gavin Sheets had given the White Sox a 6-5 lead in the top of the extra frame by clubbing an RBI double, but the Guardians still came away with their sixth win in the past seven games. Sheets finished with three hits, including a home run, and five RBIs.
Chicago, which led 5-0 at one point, fell to 2-10. The White Sox stranded a runner at third in the eighth, ninth and 10th innings on Wednesday.
The visitors scored twice in the first. After his run-scoring double, Sheets eventually came home from third while Andrew Benintendi was caught trying to steal second.
In the third, Chicago's Nicky Lopez opened the frame with an infield single and Robbie Grossman walked. Two batters later, Sheets unleashed a towering drive well into the right field seats off Cleveland starter Tanner Bibee for a 5-0 lead.
Bibee allowed all five runs on six hits and walked three over 4 1/3 innings. He fanned two.
Cleveland finally got on the board in the fourth when Josh Naylor cleared the center field wall. Ramon Laureano was later hit by a pitch, and Bo Naylor also went deep to center field off White Sox starter Erick Fedde.
Steven Kwan made it a one-run game with his solo homer to right-center off Fedde in the fifth.
The Guardians ended Fedde's night when they loaded the bases with nobody out in sixth. However, they were only able to tie it, as a run came home when David Fry was hit by a pitch from Tanner Banks.
Fedde surrendered five runs (four earned) and four hits in five-plus innings. He walked three and struck out three.
Eli Morgan (1-0) earned the win for Cleveland.
