Justify Wins Kentucky Derby, Breaks Curse Of Apollo
Undefeated Justify continued his win streak and became the first horse since 1882 to win the Kentucky Derby without racing as a two-year-old by reaching the wire in an unofficial time of 2:04.20 to seize the roses and claim a legitimate chance for the Triple Crown.
Going off at 5/2, Justify—sold two years ago for half a million dollars—dominated the race, never providing a window of opportunity to runners-up Good Magic and Audible, themselves considered in the running by bettors. Long shot Instilled Regard came in fourth, providing the $2.00 superfecta bettor a $40,000 payday, if such a person exists.
The Kentucky Derby favorite has now won the race six years in a row.
