Last Night's Winner: Philadelphia Flailers
In sports, everyone is a winner—some people just win better than others. Like the Chicago Blackhawks, who seriously got under Philly's skin, as evidenced by Dan Carcillo launching himself at anything that moves, and Chris Pronger literally throwing in the towel.
Desperate times call for desperate measures. Facing the prospect of going down 2-0 in the Stanley Cup Finals? I'd say that's desperate. So is starting Carcillo, who's obviously not out there for his hockey skills. His final line from last night? Three shots on goal, two penalty minutes, and one bonecrushing hit — on his teammate Jeff Carter:
Carcillo did his part, jawing with the Blackhawks in warmups, and trying to draw penalties. That's what he was put on this earth to do. But the playoffs isn't the place for that. The playoffs is about scoring more goals than the other team, and that's all. Carcillo's not going to help with that.
The best running subplot of these playoffs has been the NHL's "History Will Be Made" series of ads. More specifically, the parodies. So hats off to whoever stayed up late making this gem:
In the end, the Flyers dominated the third period. And losing a pair of one-goal games at the United Center is nothing to sneeze at. But in the end, it's frustrating, and that frustration spilled over after the final horn. Chris Pronger went to retrieve a puck from the ice (as he had in game 1). Ben Eager, the ex-Flyer who scored the GWG, told him he could keep it. Pronger responded with a snap shot, sending a towel on the ice, at Eager.
What happened?
Where's the puck, Pronger was asked.
"It's in the garbage," Pronger replied. "Where it belongs."
You shot a towel at Eager when he complained?
"So what," Pronger replied.
You're collecting pucks now?
"Why not? What's wrong? It's sitting there. What else is gonna happen to it? It's sitting there. Sure, why not. You got a problem with that?"
Are you gonna sell it on eBay?
"I don't know. Apparently, it got him upset. So I guess it worked, didn't it? It's too bad. I guess little things amuse little minds."
If Philadelphia doesn't work some home cooking of their own, Eager might have a big, shiny thing to amuse him.
