Late swings impact 60-player Olympic women's golf competition

Mandatory Credit: Steven Bisig-USA TODAY Sports Amy Yang of South Korea did more than claim the first major of her 17-year career at the KPMG Women's PGA Championship on Sunday. She also punched her ticket to the Summer Olympics in Paris by rising 15 spots to No. 5 in the Rolex Rangs.
The third women's major of the year served as the final event before the 60-player Olympic field was finalized on Monday. Also earning a spot was Japan's Miyu Yamashita, who leapt past countrywomen Ayaka Furue and Nasa Hataoka with her runner-up finish at Sahalee Country Club in Sammamish, Wash.
The women's competition will take place Aug. 7-10 at Le Golf National, which is also the site of the men's competition the week before and was the host course for the 2018 Ryder Cup.
World No. 1 Nelly Korda is the defending gold medalist and one of three representatives from the United States. The others are second-ranked Lilia Vu and No. 9 Rose Zhang, with No. 16 Ally Ewing falling one rankings points shy despite a tie for fifth at the KPMG, where she played her final nine holes in 1 over par.
The top 15 players in the Rolex Rankings are eligible for the Olympics, with no more than four from a single country. For the first time since golf returned to the Summer Olympics, no country will be sending four players.
The remainder of the field is determined strictly by the rankings, with a max of two from a single country that does not already have at least two in the top 15.
