Mariners' Brendan Donovan placed on 7-day concussion list

The Seattle Mariners placed infielder/outfielder Brendan Donovan on the 7-day concussion list prior to Sunday's game against the visiting Chicago Cubs.

Donovan was scratched from Saturday's lineup after being hit in the head by a baseball in the batting cages prior to the game. Seattle manager Dan Wilson said Donovan was hit while taking swings.

The move is retroactive to Friday, as Donovan could return as soon as Saturday, August 29.

"It was just one of those situations that's unfortunate," Wilson told reporters on Sunday. "But he will be back hopefully as soon as possible."

Seattle recalled infielder Patrick Wisdom from Triple-A Tacoma in a corresponding move.

Donovan, 29, was acquired from the St. Louis Cardinals in the offseason and has played in just 39 games due to injuries. He twice went on the injured list with groin injuries and returned from the second ailment on Aug. 4 after missing 2 1/2 months.

Donovan is batting .277 with three homers and 15 RBIs in 137 at-bats.

Wisdom, 34, batted .122 with one homer and four RBIs in 15 games with Seattle earlier this season.

Earlier in his career, Wisdom hit 76 homers during a three-year span (2021-23) for the Cubs.
