Mariners bully Rockies, earn split of twin bill
Cal Raleigh homered and singled, Seby Zavala had three hits and the Seattle Mariners beat the Colorado Rockies 10-2 in Denver on Sunday night to earn a split of a day-night doubleheader.
Julio Rodriguez and Luke Raley had two hits apiece for Seattle, which has won five of its past six games.
Elias Diaz and Elehuris Montero each had two hits for Colorado, which won the first game of the twin bill, 2-1, in 10 innings.
The Rockies got on the board first to take an early lead in the nightcap. Ezequiel Tovar, who had three hits in the afternoon game, reached on an error leading off the bottom of the first. Ryan McMahon walked, and both runners came home on Diaz's double to right field.
Mariners starter Emerson Hancock (2-2) settled down after that. He ended up lasting six innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on four hits while walking one and striking out four.
Seattle sent 10 batters to the plate in a big second inning.
Ty France led off with a double, went to third on a single and scored on a sacrifice fly. Colorado starter Peter Lambert hit the next two batters to load the bases before Zavala's RBI single tied the game and J.P. Crawford tripled to center field to clear the bases and make it 5-2.
Crawford then scored on a wild pitch.
Lambert (2-1) got out of the frame and was done for good after three innings, allowing six runs on six hits. He didn't issue a walk and fanned five.
Luis Urias was hit on the wrist by one of Lambert's pitches in the second. He stayed in to run the bases and scored as part of the rally but was replaced by Josh Rojas in the bottom of the inning.
The Mariners extended their lead in the sixth inning against reliever Noah Davis. Zavala doubled with one out, moved to third on Crawford's groundout and scored on Rodriguez's single.
Raleigh followed with his fifth home run of the season to make it 9-2. He later added a sacrifice fly in the eighth to complete the scoring.
