Mariners hold on for 5-3 win over Brewers
Bryce Miller pitched seven scoreless innings and the Seattle Mariners held on to defeat the host Milwaukee Brewers 5-3 in an interleague game Saturday night.
Jorge Polanco and Luis Urias homered for the Mariners, who snapped a three-game losing streak. Rookie Jackson Chourio went deep for the Brewers.
Miller (1-1) gave up three hits, walked one and struck out seven.
Brewers starter DL Hall (0-1) took the loss. The lefty went 5 1/3 innings and allowed three runs on eight hits, with two walks and five strikeouts.
The Mariners lifted Miller after throwing just 78 pitches and with a 4-0 lead.
The Brewers immediately jumped on reliever Austin Voth in the eighth.
Brice Turang led off by lining a single into right field and Chourio deposited a 1-1 sweeper into the second deck in left to cut Milwaukee's deficit in half. A one-out walk to William Contreras was it for Voth, as the Mariners brought in lefty Gabe Speier to face Christian Yelich. Speier walked Yelich on four pitches and cleanup hitter Willy Adames on five to load the bases for pinch-hitter Rhys Hoskins, who hit a sacrifice fly to deep left to make it 4-3.
After the Brewers announced Joey Ortiz as a pinch-hitter, the Mariners brought in Trent Thornton and the right-hander got Ortiz to hit into a fielder's choice to end the inning.
Mariners closer Andres Munoz retired the side in order in the ninth inning for his second save.
The Mariners opened the scoring in the third, tallying three times.
Samad Taylor led off with a bunt single down the first-base line, took second on a passed ball and advanced to third as J.P. Crawford blooped a single down the left-field line. Julio Rodriguez chopped a single up the middle, scoring Taylor and sending Crawford to third. After Polanco hit into a run-scoring fielder's choice, Mitch Haniger grounded a single to center. Mitch Garver grounded a single off the glove of diving third baseman Oliver Dunn to make it 3-0.
Polanco's leadoff homer in the eighth into the second deck in right off Bryse Wilson gave the Mariners a 4-0 lead.
Urias, a former Brewer, went deep to left-center off Hoby Milner leading off the ninth to extend the lead to 5-3.
